Integrity – The Connection Between Military Experience and Entrepreneurship

Probably the most valuable skill the military instills that is absolutely critical to success as an entrepreneur is integrity. Integrity is many things. It’s not just being honest and morally sound; it’s being forthright and doing the right thing when you know what needs to be done—even when it sometimes requires grave personal sacrifice. Personal integrity is all a person has when they are ultimately alone having lost everything that is external to them. Integrity is what allowed prisoners of war to survive years in what most people would consider a living hell and still maintain who they were. Surprisingly, it seems to be one of the most difficult characteristics to find in the business world today.

As an entrepreneur, I believe that having integrity is absolutely critical because it enhances all aspects of business and longevity. Business Integrity people must know they can trust me and that I will keep my promises even when those commitments can be costly. If I say I’m going to do something, I do it. It’s important in business to do the right thing at all times even when it seems to be personally harmful. And one of the most important reasons to truly be a person with solid integrity is that it allows you to readily recognize other people with integrity; this is critical for finding the right partners and employees.

Having integrity is also the key ingredient to being happy and consistent when you have become successful. It has been my experience that people who did not have rock solid integrity prior to achieving success often seem to face great difficulties dealing with the many life options they are afforded with success—many seem to lose everything or “fall off the deep end.”
